The Marangu Route is also known as the “Coca Cola” or “tourist” route. It is the easiest and shortest route to the summit. This is also the only route with the comforts of sleeping huts at every campsite with solar-powered lights and comfortable beds.
This is probably the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. Machame route offers strictly tents only for accommodation. This makes the Machame route (also referred to as the "Whiskey route") better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker, however rewarding him with scenic splendor.
The Rongai Route is easier and more scenic than the Marangu or Machame routes, and the success rate is very high. All climbers sleep in tents (tents are included) and meals are served in a dinner tent or on a blanket outside.
The route starts on the north side of the mountain just south of the Kenyan border.
The Marangu Route, often dubbed the 'Coca Cola' or 'tourist' route, stands out as the easiest and shortest path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. What distinguishes this route is its provision of comforts, earning it the reputation as the most comfortable trek. Throughout the journey, climbers enjoy the convenience of sleeping huts at each campsite, featuring solar-powered lights and comfortable beds. The communal huts foster a vibrant atmosphere, with climbing groups from various countries sharing meals in dining areas.
The typical duration for this route is 5 days, though opting for a 6-day itinerary enhances acclimatization. This additional day allows for rest at Horombo or the opportunity to ascend to a base camp below Kibo's sub-peak, Mawenzi. The Marangu Route not only ensures a memorable summit experience but also provides a unique blend of comfort and camaraderie for climbers worldwide.
This is probably the most beautiful route up Mount Kilimanjaro. All your equipment and supplies are pottered and a cook prepares all your meals. Where accommodation on the Marangu route is in huts, the Machame route offers strictly tents only. This makes Machame (also referred to as the "Whiskey route") better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker, however rewarding him with a scenic splendor such as not seen on the Marangu route. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira, to the misty revelations of Kibo at the great Barranco Wall, the Machame route offers the adventurous hiker a stunning scenic "slide show" over 6 days. The Machame route is normally completed in a minimum of 6 days. There is an added benefit to this, as you are afforded the most valuable commodity on the mountain - acclimatization. The Machame route takes you high to Lava Tower (4630 m) on the day 3 and brings you down by nearly 700 m for an overnight at Barranco camp (3950 m). This is the secret to successful acclimatization.
The Rongai Route is easier and more scenic than the Marangu or Machame routes, and the success rate is very high. All climbers sleep in tents (tents are included) and meals are served in a dinner tent or on a blanket outside.
The route starts on the north side of Mount Kilimanjaro just south of the Kenyan border. The descent is down the Marangu Route on the south side of the mountain, so climbers see the mountain from many viewpoints.
